Written pseudonymously by "A Square", the book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. The story describes a two-dimensional world occupied by geometric figures, whereof women are simple line-segments, while men are polygons with various numbers of sides. The narrator is a square named A Square, a member of the caste of gentlemen and professionals, who guides the readers through some of the implications of life in two dimensions. Flatland has often been categorized as science fiction although it could more precisely be called "mathematical fiction". With the advent of modern science fiction from the 1950s to the present day, Flatland has seen a revival in popularity, especially among science fiction and cyberpunk fans. Many works have been inspired by the novella, including novel sequels and short films.

Metacomet (1638–1676), also known by his adopted English name King Philip, was chief to the Wampanoag people and the second son of the sachem Massasoit. He became a chief in 1662 when his brother Wamsutta (or King Alexander) died shortly after their father Massasoit. Wamsutta's widow Weetamoo (d. 1676), sunksqua of the Pocasset, was Metacomet's ally and friend for the rest of her life. Metacomet married Weetamoo's younger sister Wootonekanuske. No one knows how many children they had or what happened to them all. Wootonekanuske and one of their sons were sold to slavery in the West Indies following the defeat of the Native Americans in what became known as King Philip's War. Achleitner war der Sohn des Straubinger Stadtpfarrchoralisten Innozenz Achleitner. While his ambitions were literary and historical (his major work is a massive history of the United States in the age of Jefferson), he was not completely immune from the political life. The Education of Henry Adams is the Pulitzer Prize winning autobiography of Henry Adams. He recounts the education he received, lamenting that formal schooling failed to prepare him for a century of technological and philosophical change. This book is an excellent way to learn about 19th century America, interestingly he chose the third person to tell his own story The Education is much more a record of Adams's introspection than of his deeds. It is an extended meditation on the social, technological, political, and intellectual changes that occurred over Adams's lifetime. Adams concluded that his traditional education at Harvard failed to help him come to terms with the rapid changes he saw in his lifetime; hence his need for self-education. Many consider this the best autobiography ever written.

Der Ausdruck "Sinn des Lebens" hat bei Adler zwei verschiedene Bedeutungen: einmal den Sinn, den ein bestimmter Mensch in seinem Leben sucht und findet und der aufs engste zusammenhängt mit der Meinung, die er von sich, den Mitmenschen und der Welt hat; zweitens wird darunter der "wahre" Sinn des Lebens verstanden, jener Sinn, der außerhalb unserer Erfahrung liegt und der auch von jemandem verfehlt werden kann, der fest davon überzeugt ist, zu wissen, worauf es im Leben ankommt. "Nach einem Sinn des Lebens zu fragen hat nur Wert und Bedeutung, wenn man das Bezugssystem Mensch-Kosmos im Auge hat". Die stete Anforderung aus dem Kosmos heißt "Entwicklung", welche aus dem nativen Minderwertigkeitsgefühl nach Selbsterhaltung, Vermehrung, Kontakt mit der Außenwelt und Streben nach einer "idealen Gemeinschaft der Zukunft" im Sinne von Immanuel Kant drängt. Alfred Adler (1870-1937) war ein österreichischer Arzt und Psychotherapeut. Alfred Adler (1870-1937) war ein österreichischer Arzt und Psychotherapeut. Er entstammte einer jüdischen Familie und konvertierte im Jahr 1904 zum Protestantismus. Adler ist der Begründer der Individualpsychologie.

Er durfte sich das gestatten, weil er sich allein in seinem Arbeitszimmer befand; er richtete dabei die Frage an das Schicksal, was er nun machen solle. Die durch seine Person vereinigten Herzogtümer von Weißenfels älterer und jüngerer Linie bezeichneten auf der Landkarte Deutschlands einen Flecken, den man bequem mit einem Fünfpfennigstück zudecken konnte; mithin war das "Regieren" derselben eine Arbeit, die sich im Maximalfalle über die Dauer einer Stunde pro Tag beim besten Willen nicht ausdehnen konnte. Die Residenzstadt mit ihrem imposanten Schlosse war ein kleines, verträumtes Nest, in dem das gesamte Militärkontingent des Landes in der Stärke eines ›Leib-Regimentes‹ Infanterie sein denkbar Möglichstes tat, um etwas Leben hineinzubringen. Der Hofstaat beschränkte sich auf wenige Hofchargen; die Empfänge im Schlosse waren Ereignisse, die sich unter dem Titel von zwei oder drei Hofbällen im Winter und ebensoviel Hofgartenkonzerten im Sommer in weiser Beschränkung abspielten. Man konnte also nicht behaupten, daß der Herzog und seine Gemahlin unter der Last ihrer Pflichten hätten zusammenbrechen müssen."

Während fast alle Romane der Autorin Motive des Kriminalromans aufweisen, schrieb sie mit den "Windmüller-Romanen" auch ganz explizit eine Reihe von Krimis, die den "Gentleman-Detektiv" Dr. Franz Xaver Windmüller prekäre Fälle in aristokratischen Kreisen und diplomatischen Milieus verfolgen und lösen lassen.
